The great government skills swindle

Yes this week saw the Pre Budget Report (PBR) and while it was quite a shock (who knew Darling was going to crank up National Insurance contributions??) the smattering of skills training served up certainly leaves a lot to be desired.
It seems that, again, skills - while supposedly taking a front-seat - have been conveniently sidelined again, ambushed by corportate tax and that nasty NI sting. In fact, analysts have critisised Darling's PBR for being a thinly-veiled attempt at electioneering rather than offering anything concrete for businesses to get their teeth stuck into.

The 'he-cession' sees women boosting skills to break glass ceiling

Women are increasingly using the recession as an opportunity to improve their business skills in a bid to break through the glass ceiling, new research suggests.
Despite the downturn taking a heavier toll on men than it is on women, research gathered by IT training company Indicia Training has reported a 54% increase in the number of women turning to business skills training since this time last year.
It was previously feared that this recession would have a worse impact on women than on men.

PBR skills training boost too youth-focused

Unemployed young people are to be guaranteed a job, work placement or "work-related skills training" following the government’s Pre Budget Report (PBR) announced yesterday but nothing is being set aside for the older unemployed.
Jobless under 24s are set to get Darling’s new ‘job or training guarantee’ which was originally included in the April 2009 Budget and due to come into force next month.
